Nick was born in Cape Town on 21 October 1973 and was raised and
educated in Zimbabwe. A childhood in Africa is conducive to an active
lifestyle and, not surprisingly, he played sport from an early age.
His favourite sports when growing up were, you've guessed it, running,
swimming and cycling. All he wanted as a boy was a bike so he could
join his dad on his bike rides.
It wasn't until the age of 17, however,
that Nick got his first bike. However, this did not stop him entering
his first triathlon in Zimbabwe at the age of 16, borrowing his dad's
bike and combining his 3 favourite sports: swimming, cylcing and running.
Nick's first triathlon was not his best, coming last out of a field of
about 60! Not to be put off, he put his theory about hard work versus
talent into practice and started training in earnest.
Having started
triathlon seriously in 1995 whilst in the British Parachute Regiment Nick became
a professional triathlete in 2002. The rest, as they say,
is history.
Goals::
Nick's goals are simple: to be a world class Ironman athlete.
He follows the theory that success as an Ironman depends upon hard work
and training more than natural talent. While by many people's standards
Nick is a talented athlete, his opinion is that he has got to the level
he has through hard work and training rather than natural athletic talent.
Nick's success so far has mainly been in Half Ironman races, with wins in
several high profile races in Australia in 2003 and 2004.
Having qualified for Kona 2010 with an impressive 4th at IM Florida, his next goal is
to win an Ironman within 2 years and improve on his 37th position (2007) in the next run out
at IM Hawaii.
